Opposition Stops Government From Bulldozing Electoral Reforms Bills

The government and opposition in the national assembly (NA) have finally agreed to form a joint parliamentary committee on electoral reforms.

Earlier, the opposition leaders of different parties had denied meeting with government officials on the subject after Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan claimed so during a presser on Monday.

During the presser, Dr Babar Awan had claimed that government and opposition members agreed on the formation of a panel comprising legislators from NA and Senate last week.

However, the opposition members of PPP and PML-N had denied any such sitting.

Now, it has been confirmed that a joint parliamentary panel will deliberate on electoral reforms before the two controversial bills are presented in the assembly.

The electoral reforms committee will be formed after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had raised 37 objections on holding the next general elections using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
