Pakistan Steel Mills Can Help Combating Coronavirus Crisis

Steel Mills’ oxygen plant, which is non-functional now, has a capacity to produce 520 tons of pure oxygen daily

Near to collapse Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), with zero production and outdated machinery can be of imperative use as it has a plant that can produce oxygen for the country amid coronavirus pandemic.

Even as the rust has started to deposit over its equipment and the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved a retrenchment plan for it, PSM’s non-functional plant, which used to produce oxygen for the furnace, can produce up to 520 tons of pure breathing gas daily.

With the recent surge in coronavirus cases in Pakistan and the menace that the country may face an acute shortage of life-saving gas, it is crucial to reactivate the plant in Pakistan Steel Mills.

As per sources, the majority of engineers and workers from the plant were sacked however, they have claimed that the plant can be made functional within a week on war footings.

The functional plant could be able to meet the oxygen demand for the whole country.

As crisis loom large over Pakistan like neighbouring India, artficial oxygen manufacturers have also sounded the alarms regarding possible oxygen shortfall.

Amid the third coronavirus wave, hospitals across the state are running low on oxygen supply and the reactivation of the plant in Steel Mills would be a good call.
