Pakistani Woman to Assist FB in Content Removal Complaints

The Board's Decisions will be Binding on the Social Media Platform

WEB DESK: Internet Activist and Lawyer Nighat Dad will start working to review content removal appeals referred to the Oversight Board formed by Facebook in May this year.

Nighat is the founder of the Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) and the only Pakistani to make it to the Facebook Oversight Board.

The 20-member board including legal experts and human rights activists has 9 women including the Pakistani activist.

The spread of rumors, false or inappropriate content associated with one has held complications for thousands of users across the globe.

Now, Facebook has activated its Oversight Board which will review the appeals filed by the users of Instagram

nd Facebook regarding the removal of content.

Whatever the decision of the board may be, it will be binding on both digital platforms.

The decision has come after Facebook was flak in various countries over the handling of hate speech and identical content.The whole review process including delving into complaints and deciding upon them would be completed in three months.

The board will only come into action once a user has had his appeal, regarding content removal, turned down by Facebook. The affected users can move to the Oversight Board to review their complaints.

After selection, cases will be assigned to a five-member panel with at least one member from the region implicated in the content. The decision with the majority of votes will be final.

The cases would be decided upon using both Facebook’s Community Standards and Values and international human rights standards. In addition to the cases accepted, the Board will also be entitled to recommend changes to Facebook’s Community Standards as deemed necessary.

All decisions made by the Oversight Board will be publicized while Facebook will have to respond publicly to them.

The board will also issue a public annual report to evaluate its work and how Facebook is meeting its commitments.
