LAHORE: A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) to remove the Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman.

A local lawyer Shabbir Ismail filed a petition in the LHC through Azhar Siddique, an advocate of the Judicial Activism Panel.

It has been argued in the petition that the Governor of Punjab cannot ask the chief minister to take the vote of confidence without any reason while it takes 4 to 7 days for the vote of confidence. It stated that he cannot ask for the vote of confidence in the ongoing session.

The petition further stated that a letter was written to the President of Pakistan and the Prime Minister to remove the Governor of Punjab but no response was given.

In his appeal, the petitioner requested the court to issue instructions to the President of Pakistan and the Prime Minister to immediately remove the governor from office.

Earlier in the month, Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman denotified CM Pervaiz Elahi as he ‘has refrained from obtaining Vote of Confidence at the appointed day and time therefore he ceases to hold office’. However, the LHC suspended the order.

On the other hand, the Punjab CM Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is likely to take the vote of confidence from the provincial assembly next week.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) have decided to summon a joint parliamentary meeting of both parties on January 2, according to ARY News.

The PTI and PML-Q lawmakers have been ordered to ensure their presence in parliamentary meeting and the MPAs who are abroad were told to return to Pakistan.

The parliamentary party meeting will also decide the strategy for the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s vote of confidence in the Punjab Assembly.
