PM Imran Khan shifts focus to Punjab LG polls; no federal cabinet session this week
Federal government has seemingly completely shifted its focus from administrative matters to the upcoming Punjab LG polls despite the nationals being hit by many troubles.
ISLAMABAD: In what appeared to be a shift of focus towards the upcoming Punjab Local Government (LG) polls by the federal government, Prime Minister Imran Khan has not summoned the weekly cabinet session for the first time.
The federal government has seemingly completely shifted its focus from administrative matters to the upcoming Punjab LG polls despite the nationals being hit by many troubles including inflation, lawlessness, uncertain political situation and others.
PM Imran Khan had chosen to launch the Naya Pakistan National Health Card scheme on Tuesday in Bahawalpur Division for providing health insurance facilities to the citizens of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar which the federal government claim to be the biggest relief to the nation.
The Punjab government has claimed to expand the health insurance programme to 63 per cent population of the province after the health cards were launched in Bahawalpur Division yesterday.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led federal government has seemingly diverted its attention towards the upcoming phases of LG polls in Punjab which is likely to be held in May in two phases.
Not only in Punjab, but the PTI top leaders have also started planning for the second phase of LG polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province where the ruling political party faced a major setback.
In Punjab, it will be a test of the PTI-led provincial government to prove its political dominancy against the rivals who are claiming that the incumbent government is losing its grip in parts of the country.
It may be noted here that the Punjab government had proposed that the Election Commission of Pakistan hold local government elections in two phases.
The ECP authorities had been told of the Punjab government’s readiness for the LG polls. As per its proposal, the first phase of LG polls would be held on May 15 and within a month’s time, the second phase will be organised.
It is expected that the ECP will notify the final lists of delimitations in Punjab on March 22. The LG government had been dissolved by the Punjab government on May 4, 2019.
