Political turmoil: Opposition leaders piling up pressure on SC to get desired verdict

Opposition leaders have piled up pressure on the SC for getting the desired verdict regarding the constitutional crisis that pushes the country into serious political turmoil.

ISLAMABAD: The opposition leaders have piled up pressure on the Supreme Court (SC) for getting the desired verdict regarding the constitutional crisis that pushes the country into serious political turmoil since the dissolution of the National Assembly (NA).

The political crisis has intensified after the back-to-back moves of the political parties following the dissolution of the National Assembly (NA) and the rejection of the no-trust move against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The Supreme Court (SC) had immediately taken notice of the intense political crisis after NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri’s ruling that pinned hopes for a solution in accordance with the Constitution.

However, the opposition leaders have started mounting pressure on the judiciary to get their desired verdict regardless of the deteriorated political and economic conditions turn up in the country.

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) head Maulana Fazlur Rehman had read out a joint communique of the combined opposition on Wednesday late night after a meeting in which the opposition parties unanimously demanded repelling of the deputy speaker’s unconstitutional ruling and National Security Committee (NSC) to publicise the facts regarding the said diplomatic cable which is being called a threat letter by PM Khan.

They also expressed fears that the political turmoil could be part of a conspiracy to impose the presidential system and dictatorship on the country and announced to stage nationwide protests on Friday to observe Constitution Day and Youm-e-Nijat from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.

Fazlur Rehman’s announcement came after his sharp criticism of the military and judiciary in an interview with senior journalist Asma Shirazi.

While mounting pressure on the top court, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said in a Twitter message on Wednesday that Justice delayed is justice denied besides comparing the current political crisis with a coup.

He said, “If it takes 30seconds to pull off a coup, it should take 30secs to undo a coup. Justice delayed is Justice denied. After last weeks constitutional breakdown in Islamabad. Today Punjab dep speaker was locked out of assembly on day of voting for CM. Barbered wire around ppls house”

He added, “None of Imran khans desperate measures can save him now. His government is gone. Selected raj [rule] is over. The people are watching, history will record, how he was brought in undemocratically and on his way out he set the constitution on fire.”

In his address to the PPP CEC on Tuesday, Bilawal had demanded justice from the Supreme Court (SC) and hoped that the verdict will benefit the country and democracy. He had said that ex-chief justices Saqib Nisar and Gulzar Ahmed had made the judiciary controversial and the constitutional case gives an opportunity to the judiciary to become uncontroversial.

Bilawal had said that PPP had never pardoned the violators of the Constitution and wouldn’t now.
