Polling begins for first phase of KP LG polls

PESHAWAR: The polling has begun for the first phase of local government (LG) polls in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province which is being contested by 37,752 candidates for 14,754 seats.
The polling has started at 8:00 am today that will be continued uninterrupted by 5:00 pm across 17 districts of KP during the first phase of LG polls.
There are 1,263,5000 registered voters in the 17 KP districts, whereas, 37,752 candidates are contesting the polls for 14,754 seats of the LG institutions.
689 candidates are contesting polls on 66 seats including five tehsil mayors and chairmen, whereas, 19,282 candidates will contest on 7,146 seats of general councillors.
3,905 candidates will contest on 2,382 seats for women, 7,513 for 2,382 seats for farmers and 6,081 for 2,382 seats for youth.
In the polls, an electoral contest will be held among 282 candidates on the minorities seats.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has established 9,279 polling stations across 17 districts including 3,440 for men, 2,979 for women and 2,870 joint polling stations.
However, the mayoral election was postponed in Dera Ismail Khan following the killing of Awami National Party (ANP) candidate Omar Khattab Sherani in a gun attack of unidentified assailants. The slain ANP candidate was contesting for the tehsil mayor seat in DI Khan.
