PPP Develops Severe Internal Rift in PML-N

Shahbaz Sharif wants to reassemble the opposition alliance which had maimed after PPP and ANP announced their departure over the issue of en-masse resignations

A major internal rift is getting visible in Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) over the return of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) in the PDM.

PML-N President and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) Shahbaz Sharif wants PPP and ANP back in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

He wants to reassemble the opposition alliance which had maimed after PPP and ANP announced their departure over the issue of en-masse resignations.

Shortly after Shahbaz got relief from Lahore High Court (LHC) and released on bail, he is endeavoring to revive anti-government coalition and recently hosted a dinner in which he invited parties in the opposition alliance as well as breakaway partners.

Shahbaz’s move faces resistance

However, PML-N seems unaligned with the approach of its president as PDM Secretary General Shahid Khaqan Abbasi announced that he would step down from the post if PPP was added again unconditionally.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz maintained that the dinner by the opposition leader had nothing to do with PDM.

However, she backed Shahid Khaqan’s decision to quit the post if PPP was given an unconditional entry into the coalition.

Further, PDM Chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman is also a major hindrance in Shahbaz’s efforts to rejoin scattered pieces of the puzzle.

After meeting the opposition leader at his residence in Lahore on Tuesday, Maulana Fazl also conditioned PPP and ANP’s return to PDM with an apology.

The resistance shows that efforts by Shahbaz Sharif to bring back both detached parties in the anti-government coalition may not result fruitful.

The next meeting of the PDM will be held on May 29.

‘This wouldn’t be happening’

Meanwhile, the rift within PML-N has provided an opportunity for the government to hit at PML-N.

Dr Shahbaz Gill, Special Assistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Political Communication, took to his Twitter account and said ‘uncle and niece (Maryam and Shahbaz) wouldn’t be attacking each other like today if PML-N was a democratic party’.

He added that PML-N was a kingdom of Sharifs and this is what happens in it.
