ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has expedited the efforts for getting the president’s slot as Asif Ali Zardari held meetings with different politicians.
Although the PPP has joined the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), which is now eyeing the president’s slot.
It may be noted here that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has accepted to assume the position of the foreign minister in the PM Sharif’s cabinet, however, he did not attend the oath ceremony.
Yesterday, Asif Ali Zardari held a meeting with Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in which they discussed the current political situation.
Moreover, he also held a meeting with Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) leader Khalid Magsi.
On the other hand, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari departed for the United Kingdom (UK) followed by central leaders including Naveed Qamar, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Sherry Rehman. Bilawal Bhutto is expected to meet Nawaz Sharif in London alongside holding meetings with the political leadership.
Sources said that PPP is eyeing the presidency after the PML-N government established its government. Some reports also suggested that PPP is also mulling over resigning from assemblies ahead of the fresh elections in the country.
In another development, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) head Maulana Fazlur Rehman met PM Shehbaz Sharif in which they discussed the political situation and matters related to mutual interests.
Earlier in the month, News360 reported that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) central leaders are divided over the key slots in the federal government and the presidency of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) supremo Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
The PPP leaders had shown reluctance to see Maulana Fazlur Rehman as the president of Pakistan. They expressed reservations that Fazl’s election as the president will be seriously impactful for the ideological base of PPP.
