PPP, MQM-P talks on new delimitations remain inconclusive

PPP MQM-P talks, new delimitations, Karachi LG polls

In the presence of Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori, the talks between Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which lasted for three hours ended remained inconclusive.

Deadlock continues between the MQM-P and PPP on issues related to local government (LG) elections and delimitations in Karachi and Hyderabad.

The three-hour meeting of the coalition parties including the federal government ended fruitlessly. MQM-P and PPP leaders left Bilawal House without talking to the media.

The Sindh government told the MQM-P leaders at Bilawal House Karachi under the chairmanship of Asif Zardari that the change of delimitations is not possible in the current changing situation. The PPP leaders said that the Sindh government’s legal team has clearly said that immediate delimitations are impossible.

On the other hand, a government delegation comprising Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and PM’s Advisor Malik Ahmed Khan held talks with MQM-P and PPP.

Last night, the federal government and MQM-P delegations met former President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and others at Bilawal House Karachi.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Faisal Sabzwari and Waseem Akhtar from MQM-P were also present in the meeting.

The legal team of the Sindh government briefed the delegation regarding the LG elections in the meeting of the coalition parties at the Bilawal House chaired by Asif Ali Zardari.

According to sources, a team of legal experts while giving a briefing said that immediate delimitation is not possible, at least four months are required for new delimitations.

The Sindh government’s position was that there is a lot of pressure from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after the order of the Sindh High Court (SHC) regarding LG elections in the Karachi and Hyderabad divisions.

The legal team while giving a briefing said that the Election Commission is reviewing the arrangements itself, said sources, adding that the delegation of MQM informed the two major parties of the ruling coalition about their concerns regarding local body elections and delimitations.

Earlier, the delegations of the federal government and MQM-P reached Bilawal House Karachi. A detailed discussion was held regarding the agreements between MQM-P, the federal delegation and PPP. On this occasion, the MQM delegation openly expressed their concerns.

According to the sources, MQM-P said that the agreement made in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is not being implemented by the People’s Party. Due to this, MQM is finding it difficult to clarify itself. Due to the non-supply of funds, the MQM-P leadership is unable to carry out development work in their respective constituencies.
