Mirza Muhammad Afridi is among the four last candidates who are representing erstwhile FATA in the upper house
Prime Minister Imran Khan surprised everyone when he nominated Mirza Muhammad Afridi as the candidate from the Senate deputy chairman.
Afridi was elected as an independent senator from erstwhile Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA), which have now been merged in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), in Senate election 2018.
The Senate deputy chairman candidate is among the four last candidates who are representing FATA. He will serve as a senator for six years and retire in 2024.

Offices he holds
Afridi is the chairman of the Senate standing committee on Commerce and a member of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) policy board.
The deputy chairman candidate was elected as the president of the Chess Federation of Pakistan last year after the demise of Senator Kalsoom Perveen.
Relation with Javed Afridi
According to Pakistan Daily, Senator Mirza Afridi is the first cousin of Haier Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Javed Afridi and a close relative of the freshly-elected senator from KP, Ayub Afridi.

Controversial nomination?
Meanwhile, Afridi’s nomination sparked controversy as Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah claimed that he joined PML-N after winning the Senate election 2018.
However, the deputy chairman candidate has denied these claims and said he joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in August, 2018.

Instead, Afridi thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan for the nomination and expressed that the premier fulfilled the promise made with tribal people.
