PTI long march, Islamabad siege: Is Pakistan on a collision course?

Imran Khan, PTI long march, Islamabad siege, Corps Commanders Conference

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Wazirabad police on the November 3 assassination attempt on party chairman Imran Khan and called for a siege in Islamabad.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry has rejected the FIR and termed it as a useless piece of paper, on the other hand, an important Corps Commanders Conference has been called today.

The political party rejected the FIR of the murderous attack on Imran Khan in Wazirabad during the PTI long march in which a person lost his life and 13 people including Imran Khan sustained injuries.

The Wazirabad police registered the FIR yesterday (Monday), hours after the Supreme Court issued directives. The top court had warned of suo motu action against the police for not registering the FIR.

The Wazirabad police registered an FIR 96 hours after the incident but the FIR did not include the names of the nominated persons which the PTI leadership had mentioned in its complaint.

Naveed Mehr has been named as the main accused in the First Information Report (FIR), while no other person or accused has been named in the FIR.

It should be noted that PTI wanted to name Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and ISI Major General Faisal Naseer as the main accused in the FIR.

In a Twitter message, Fawad Chaudhry termed the FIR registered by the Wazirabad police as a piece of useless paper.

He has written that PTI has already given its stance if the names of Shehbaz Sharif, Rana Sanaullah and Faisal Naseer are included in the FIR then it will be considered legal otherwise it would be a worthless piece of paper.

The central leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf issued instructions to the marchers to gather at the intersection of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, while on the other hand, the federal government deployed heavy contingents of FC and Rangers at the entrance and exit of the federal capital which increased the risks of collision.

Yesterday, PTI workers completely blocked the motorway from Islamabad to Peshawar and from Islamabad to Lahore while protesting against the non-registration of an FIR against the assassination attempt on Imran Khan which resulted in thousands of vehicles being stuck in traffic.

PTI leaders and workers blocked the Islamabad-Peshawar and Islamabad-Lahore motorways for several hours while holding protests on the Murree Road going to Shamsabad, burning tires due to which the traffic system was disrupted for several hours.

In another development, an important meeting of the Corps Commanders has been convened at General Headquarters – Rawalpindi today.

In the Corps Commanders Conference chaired by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the internal and regional security situation and the professional affairs of the army will be discussed.
