Punjab, KPK elections: ECP meeting ended inconclusively

Election officials say we do not have authority to give elections date, guidance will be taken from Supreme Court on constitutional crisis

The meeting of ECP has ended inconclusively, it is not in the power of the commission to give the date of the election. Reacting to the inconclusive meeting of the Election Commission, Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fawad Chaudhry has said that nothing happened except wasting time in the meetings of the Election Commission and the Governor.

The meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan continued for about 2 hours under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

Important issues related to general elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were discussed in the consultation meeting of the Election Commission.

The Election Commission has decided to seek guidance from the Supreme Court on the current constitutional crisis. The announcement of the election commission meeting will be issued regularly.

Instruction of Lahore High Court

It should be remembered that today the Lahore High Court issued instructions to the Election Commission to submit a report regarding the schedule of general elections in Punjab, a few days ago the court had ordered the ECP to conduct elections in Punjab within 90 days.

During the hearing, Justice Jawad Hassan of Lahore High Court remarked that the court has done its work, and now the court is waiting for what they are doing.

The petitioner’s counsel told the court that the Election Commission of Pakistan had issued a press release that the Punjab Governor had refused to give the date.

On the other hand, giving a strong reaction to the inconclusive meeting of the Election Commission, the leader of Tehreek-e-Insaf Fawad Chaudhry has written on the social media website Twitter, “As expected, the meeting of the Election Commission and the Governor was only a waste of time. The Constitution and the orders of the High Court have been made a joke.”

The leader of Tehreek-e-Insaf Fawad Chaudhry further wrote that “Constitution is being treated like a junk book, people’s opinion has no status, nor time, if people don’t come out on the streets to restore the constitution, Pakistan will become a new population.”
