Thanks Edhis, Geeta Finally Reunites With Mother in India

Geeta, an Indian girl who is unable to either speak or hear, traveled to Nanded in Maharashtra India from Pakistan in 2015 to search in search of his parents finally reunited with her mother with endless help of several authorities. 

Geeta was only a teenager when she was adopted and taken to Karachi’s Edhi Foundation from the Samjhauta Express at Lahore station by Pakistan Rangers around 20 years ago.

The teenager was brought to an Edhi Centre in Lahore and then moved to Karachi branch where Bilquis Edhi, the wife of the philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, renamed her from Radha to Geeta.

Initially, Bilquis Edhi named her Fatima and later quoted “after observing her ways of touching feet, etc, I realized that she was Hindu. That’s when I changed her name to Geeta.”

It was disclosed that the real name of Geeta is Radha Waghmare.

After Geeta reunited with her mother in India, she contacted Bilquis Edhi and thanked her and the foundation for pulling in all the hard work.

Her mother named Meena is a resident of Naigaon village in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Geeta’s biological father died a few years ago and the family makes ends meet by selling clay pots.

The 27-year-old Indian girl is currently a student of grade eight and aims to pursue a career after completing her special education. She is also a member of Madhya Pradesh’s non-governmental organization (NGO) named Anand Service Society for disabled persons.

Geeta was called “Hindustan ki beti” (India’s daughter) by late external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who promised to make every possible effort in finding her family.

Many had assumed that the release of the hit Indian movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015 was a reflection of Geeta.
