His absence from the parliament had irked the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto.
During his speech on Wednesday, Bilawal censured the mysterious absence of Shahbaz Sharif from the crucial session of the year and said that the opposition had become ineffective.
In response, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal told the media that the opposition leader skipped the sitting because of the death of his cousin Tariq Shafi.
Interestingly, Shahbaz wasn’t even present when Prime Minister Imran Khan talked in the NA after the passage of the budget and offered a dialogue on long-standing electoral reforms.
Shahbaz’s disappearance has raised many questions as he had committed with Bilawal Bhutto that they would not let the budget pass from the lower house on the day the finance bill was presented in the NA.
The opposition could offer no resistance and the budget was approved by 172-138 votes as some 25 opposition members remained at bay from the assembly most of whom belonged to PML-N.
The political analysts said that the opposition leader must have realized the gravity of the responsibility on his shoulders and ensured his presence in the budget session.
They added that Shahbaz’s absence paved way for other PML-N members to skip the session too.
