Sindh government will weigh its options today regarding the week-long lockdown in the province imposed on August 1.

The partial lockdown in the province was enforced in view of the surge in coronavirus cases particularly in Karachi, the largest and most populated city of the country.

The decision will be a hard call for the provincial government as it was heavily criticized for snubbing the policy of smart lockdown to save people from economic distress.

The PPP-led government will mull over different factors with primary focus on the test-to-positivity ratio in Karachi.

During the past 24-hours, some 2,170 covid-19 cases surfaced in the province of which 1,539 were detected in Karachi.

At the time lockdown was imposed, the rate in the metropolis had soared to over 25% with most of the infections with delta variant of covid-19.

After a week of restrictions including closure of businesses, dining in restaurants and a ban on mass gatherings, the rate has dropped slightly to around 23%.

The business community of Karachi had strongly opposed the lockdown orders but abided by the appeal of the Sindh government to observe restrictions in the larger interest of public health.

However, any extension is expected to receive a backlash from the community as it has imprinted economic woes on thousands of people who depend on daily-wage for living.

After lockdown and binding display of vaccination cards for stepping outside, the inoculation percentage in the metropolis has moved up and as many as 150,000 people are getting themselves jabbed daily.

Further, the coronavirus preyed on three more medical practitioners in the country.

Civil Hospital Medico-Legal Officer (MLO) Dr Nisar Ali Shah and Dr Farzana Memon succumbed to the virus in Karachi while Dr Ahsan-ul-Haq died in Peshawar.

Moreover, some 4,720 cases surfaced in the country during the last 24-hours and 95 infected patients breathed their last.

The positivity rate was recorded at 8.24%.
