After the acquittal of murder convict Shahrukh Jatoi, the cousin of the slain Shahzeb Khan recounted the ordeal of the bereaved family.
Slain Shahzeb Khan’s cousin wrote on Instagram, “I will always remember you as my litter brother, killed unjustly by an animal of the city! They will answer to Allah one day, that’s when you will get justice!”
She said, “Let me paint a picture for you. It’s the first ever wedding in your family, it’s your eldest daughter’s valima. You have one son, who turns 21 in a month. Once the valima has ended, you are doing the typical dropping off relatives across town. You get home and change. You get a call from his friends and they tell you he has been shot and they are rushing him to Zaiuddin Hosptial. Mind you, he is still in the suit he wore to his sisters valima.”
Showbiz stars react to acquittal of murder convict Shahrukh Jatoi
“Over the years, I had learnt to compartmentalise this whole incident. We lost our mamo’s only son n then our mamo. Their family was broken n you saw the change, the cracks. They were a jolly bunch n I really never saw them happy again. But we all made time heal us. But this, this news is like ripping that bandaid of time off the wounds that took years to heal. I don’t know who is responsible, but I hope u rot in hell for this injustice!”
“For all those asking: – No, my mamo’s family did not take money – Yes, they were forced and coerced to make statements n sign documents – if you cannot respect the pain our family is going through right now, please try and be kind. Don’t say anything vs. questioning our motives n intentions.”
The Supreme Court on Tuesday acquitted Shahrukh Jatoi as well as his accomplices in the Shahzeb Khan murder case.
A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, heard the case.
An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had awarded the death penalty to Jatoi and his accomplice Siraj Ali Talpur for Shahzeb’s murder in 2012 following a petty dispute. Siraj’s younger brother, Sajjad Ali Talpur, and domestic helper Ghulam Murtaza Lashari had been handed life sentences.
SC had power to convict Shahrukh Jatoi, others for fasad-fil-arz: Jibran Nasir
A couple of months after the sentence was passed, however, Shahzeb’s parents had issued a formal pardon for the convicts, approved by the Sindh High Court (SHC). Despite the pardon, however, the death penalty had been upheld because of the addition of terrorism charges to the case — up until the SHC dropped the charges and ordered a retrial in the case.
The SHC, while hearing appeals against the conviction, had later commuted the death sentences into life imprisonment. Subsequently, all four accused had approached the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, the court acquitted all four people.
