Social Media Ban on Punjab District Judiciary Deemed Paragon

In a benchmark decision, the new Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice has directed the district judiciary across Punjab to avoid using social media.

The LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti assumed the charge on July 6. A directive to the judicial officers of Punjab said that they are supposed to live a reserved social life.

The LHC chief justice instructed district judiciary to avoid using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Muhammad Ameer Bhatti also took notice of the officials being part of social media groups and sharing sensitive information.

The judicial officers have also been asked to avoid using mobile phones during court hours except for intervals.

The chief justice warned of strict disciplinary action against the violators.

The benchmark decision has been hailed widely by social media users and legal experts as they believe that judges must focus on the adjudication of over 1.3 million pending cases.

Some 1,616 judges are currently part of the district judiciary and as many as 748 seats are lying vacant.

As per data released in June, there are 1,345,632 civil and family cases in the district and sessions courts across Punjab.

The legal experts termed the decision as a paragon and said the lower courts across the country should implement it too.

They also called for the LHC chief justice to look into the matter of vacant seats as it was also one of the factors of the increasing load of pending cases.
