Tables Have Turned For Jang Group’s Mir Shakeel

The sacked employees of Daily Awam, Daily News, and The News demonstrated outside Karachi Press Club along with senior media men and journalists

The employees of Pakistan’s biggest media group Jang, who were protesting in support of the owner Mir Shakeel ur Rehman a few months back, will now set up a protest camp against him.

Last year, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Mir Shakeel for allegedly buying property illegally from a government official nearly 34 years ago.

Following the arrest, employees of the media mogul remonstrated frequently for the release of their employer.

The media workers staged protest in harsh weather and scorching sunlight for hours in support of the owner of the Jang group.

However, the tables have turned now and the same employees of Jang group are planning to set up protest camps outside Mir Shakeel’s office and to go on hunger strikes.

The sacked employees of Daily Awam, Daily News, and The News demonstrated outside Karachi Press Club including senior media man and journalist Faheem Siddiqui, Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Secretary-General Aajiz Jamali, Dara Zafar, Secretary of The News Employees Union, former president of Karachi Press Club (KPC), Ahmed Malik, and others.

While talking to News360, Faheem Siddiqui saod, “We are in support of the sacked employees and will do our best to protect their rights”.

“We have plans to set up a hunger strike camp in front of Jang group’s office the way as we did for Mir Shakeel’s release from jail”, he added.

Meanwhile, he told negotiations had taken place with the government and the journalists were expecting positive results.

While addressing the protesting media men, Aajiz Jamali assured all possible co-operation to the sacked employees of the three newspapers.

Further, KPCFormer President Ahmed Khan Malik said that the dues of the sacked employees should be paid immediately.

“Media owners use employees for personal gains when needed and are reluctant to give them their rights later. This duplicity must be taken into account”, he added.

Meanwhile, Dara Zafar was of the view that the media workers will fight for the rights of the fired employees at every forum including courts.

On the other hand, Nasheed Afaqi, ex-editor of Daily Awam, who was fired by the employer, said, “The owners will have to pay their dues in any case as the fired employees held high-spirits”.
