Pakistani Talk Shows Have Literally Turned TV Into an ‘Idiot Box’

Talk shows on Pakistani news channels replicate 'rooster fights' where news anchors sit quietly getting entertained of fighting guests

There was a time when people watched rooster fights for fun and they now can watch it on Pakistani talk shows on multiple news channels too on the “Idiot Box” with no animals facing each other but the politicians.

If we look at the talk shows on Pakistani news channels aired on different channels, we see something very similar to unruly cockrel fights where the referee becomes a silent spectator in pursuit of ratings.

In these programs, roosters are the politicians who sling mud on opponents on the pretext of arguments and making their points.

Due to the declining quality of television programs particularly Pakistani talk shows, it would be not wrong to say that television has turned into an ‘idiot box’.

This special News360 report will review some of the programs aired on various news channels on the same day merely with a gap of an hour.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Youth Affairs Usman Dar and Deputy Secretary-General of PML-N Ataullah Tarar were invited on the talk show of renowned anchorperson Nadeem Malik on December 28.

The debate between the two started with the resignations of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and the two leaders came face to face on the issue of degrees.

Usman Dar challenged Atta Tarar’s degree. The anchor person’s attitude in the heated atmosphere was astonishing. Nadeem Malik kept sitting quietly instead of interfering to stop.

On the same day, the program Capital Talk was broadcast between 8 and 9 pm.

The situation was no different here either. When Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar derided Prime Minister Imran Khan, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz also lost his temper. How the two leaders interacted was thus condemnable.

On December 28, the program report card was broadcast from 7 to 8 pm. Here, too, the story was no different.

Senior journalist and analyst Hassan Nisar and Reema Omar entered a quarrel.

Hassan Nisar said that politics in Pakistan was a business. This led to a heated argument between him and Reema Omar. Later, during Reema Omar’s turn to express views, Hassan Nisar interrupted three times which is a violation of etiquettes. Once again the anchor remained silent instead of intervening and barring Nisar doing so.

Former Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair and Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz fought in the program of well-known anchor Kashif Abbasi.
