Transparency International Wants Action From Imran Khan

PTI government issued notices to at least 294 Pakistanis out of 444 who were named in the Panama Papers when it came into power in 2018 however nothing happened following the sensational announcement

Transparency International-Pakistan (TI-P) wants Imran Khan to start action against all Pakistani citizens named in Panama and Pandora Papers.

TI-P has written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan in this regard in which it has demanded initiation of action against all Pakistanis named in both leaks disclosing offshore accounts of influential people.

The letter said that when Panama Papers were released in May 2016, cases were filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan while SECP, SBP, FIA, and FBR also took up the matter to investigate nominated citizens.

However, Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan only took action against few nominated citizens, sparing a majority.

Similarly, SECP, SBP, FIA, and FBR failed to initiate any tangible action against them as well.

TI-P letter recalled, “On April 8, 2018, the Tax Amnesty Scheme Foreign Assets (Declaration and Repatriation) Act, 2018 was announced which was wholly rejected by the Prime Minister, in his capacity as the head of PTI, stating that such an Act is intended to punish tax-payers for their honesty and provides a chance to corrupt individuals to turn their black money white”.

The amnesty scheme however didn’t ask the declarers how they earned the money in Pakistan to check if assets were made through illegal means.
