KARACHI: Two persons were rescued after a four-member family drowned in a drainage nullah in Karachi’s Shadman Town area after heavy rainfall yesterday.
The drowning incident occurred after a family including a man, his wife and two minor children were travelling on a motorcycle which suddenly fell into the drainage nullah due to slippery roads. Due to heavy rain, the road was submerged with rainwater and the nullah was overflowing which led the motorcyclist lose the track of the road.
The man and his son were rescued by the locals after they managed to float themselves to the surface of the overflowing nullah.
After starting a search late Sunday night, the rescue officials recovered the body of the woman but the newborn girl was still missing.
Amongst top political figures of the metropolis, only Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman reached the incident site along with activists who also assisted the rescuers to find the drowned family members.
The JI Karachi chief, who is also the mayoral candidate in the forthcoming Sindh local government (LG) elections on July 24, launched sharp criticism against the local authorities for their negligence which claimed precious lives of the citizens.
In a similar incident, two citizens including a father-son duo lost their lives on July 8 in Karachi’s Gadap river after their motorcycle slipped near the river after the heavy rainfall.
