Using Abusive Language Isn’t The Culture of Bulleh Shah’s Punjab

After the commotion in the national assembly in which lawmakers used profane language against each other, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) MNA from Lahore Sheikh Rohale Asghar contended that using abusive words is Punjab’s culture.

This week, the lawmakers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and PML-N came at close quarters in the lower house of the parliament of which several videos are circulating on social media.

PML-N MNA Sheikh Rohale Asghar however condoned the use of abusive language in the national assembly and said that it was Punjab’s culture.

The lawmaker apparently forgot that he represents Lahore which is the land of the mystic poet Baba Bulleh Shah who disseminated the message of love and peace with his soft poetry.

Similarly, the Poet of the East Allama Muhammad Iqbal besides other poets, philosophers, and revolutionists also hailed from Lahore and represent the actual culture of the land of the five rivers.

Besides other social media users, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill also frowned on Asghar’s statement and said that Punjab’s culture was to respect mothers and sisters.

The social media users from different parts of the province also condemned lawmaker’s claims and said that it wasn’t even the culture of their rural sites.

A Twitter user said that the use of foul language reflected one’s rearing by his family.

Columnist Noshi Gilani wrote that Punjab is the land of Sufis, saints, Bulleh Shah and Hazrat Shah Hussain.

She summed up saying ‘how many faces does illiteracy has’.
