Connected to the past
It should be noted that a three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Umar Atta Bandial, after hearing the arguments of the lawyers of all parties against the decision of the Election Commission on March 8, on the petition of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, decided to hold the elections in Punjab on October 8. The commission’s decision was annulled.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court declared the decision of the ECP null and void. In the decision, it was said that the Election Commission has no authority except to conduct the elections in 90 days. Therefore, the Election Commission’s decision of March 22 is null and void.
The Supreme Court has made some amendments regarding the elections in Punjab in its decision that the elections which were to be held on April 30 will now be held on May 14.
In the decision, it was said that the 13-day delay in the elections should be adjusted to the schedule of May 14 due to the decision of the Election Commission. The decision reduced the campaign schedule.
The Supreme Court has written in its decision that the Constitution and the law do not allow the Election Commission to extend the date.
