Thar Becomes Thirsty as RO Plants Get Dysfunctional

Tharparkar or Thar district of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led Sindh has long been facing water scarcity and the residents are compelled to drink untreated water as the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plants worth billions of rupees are out of whack.

Water scarcity has hit the Thar region so hard that it has led to food shortage and the people are left with no option than to travel miles to fetch it.

Due to the negligence of the Sindh government, some 1,445 RO plants worth billions of rupees have become inactive in interior Sindh.

The provincial government installed 2,368 RO plants to supply fresh water to Thar and the neighboring areas.

At the end of the contract on June 30, 2020, several contractors shut down the purifiers after which only 1,445 plants remained operational in the province.

Some 468 purification plants in Thar Parkar, 125 in Badin, 45 in Tando Muhammad Khan, 71 in Jamshoro, 49 in Matiari, and 84 in Sanghar are currently dysfunctional.

While talking to News360, a local journalist Sajid Nahrio said the water supply scheme of the Sindh government has failed due to which water shortage has become a matter of grave concern.

Not only this, he added that the people of the region are compelled to drink untreated water from the wells that is perilous for health and several of them have developed abdominal diseases.

The locals were of the view that the region is facing water shortage issues after General Pervez Musharraf’s era and accused PPP leaders of exploiting them.

One of the citizens told News360 that the party leaders visit them before elections but go missing after grabbing votes.

The residents sniveled that the authorities and the local government have turned their backs on them and no one is thinking about dire consequences.

They appealed the Prime Minister Pakistan to make arrangements for clean drinking water for them.
