Will PM Shehbaz Sharif provide justice to Nazim Jokhio’s family?

Nazim Jokhio's family is still waiting for justice, whereas, right activists have once again gathered a force for the conclusion of the murder case.

The family of a slain local journalist, Nazim Jokhio is still waiting for justice, whereas, the right activists have once again gathered a force to demand the conclusion of the horrific murder case besides seeking action by the new government led by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif.

The 27-year-old Nazim Jokhio was found tortured to death at a farmhouse owned by the PPP MPA while the family nominated Jam Awais, his brother PPP MNA Jam Abdul Karim and their henchmen in the murder case.

The horrible incident had taken place after Nazim Jokhio resisted the hunting of houbara bustard by PPP lawmakers’ Arab guests in Achar Salaar village on the outskirts of Karachi’s Malir district.

Recently, rights activists and classical dancer Sheema Kermani raised her voice against the removal of the names of PPP MPA Jam Awais and his brother MNA Jam Abdul Karim from the charge sheet of the Nazim Jokhio murder case.

She posted two video messages on her Twitter and announced that the right activists will own the slain journalist besides giving a protest call outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) to demand justice.

Moreover, posters demanding justice for slain Nazim Jokhio were also posed on different roads and streets prior to the protest.

It may be noted here that the widow of the slain journalist had announced to pardon all suspects including PPP MPA Jam Awais and MNA Jam Abdul Karim in the murder case.

Wife pardons suspects

In a video message, Shireen Jokhio said she wanted to fight but had been left “all alone by her own people” adding that she had taken the decision to pardon out of compulsion and for the safety of her children.

“Only my brothers and sisters who have children can understand the pain I’m going through right now,” she said. “I haven’t received any offer for a deal… I’m not doing this for money… I’m not selfish. I’m an honest girl.”

Shireen had said that she had left matters to Allah’s will but also remarked that “justice can’t be served in Pakistan.”

Advocate Mukhtar Junejo had told Dawn.com that Shireen’s pardon holds no legal value as she was neither the complainant in the case nor could she be considered Nazim’s legal heir.

Advocate Junejo, who is an eyewitness in the case and also represents the complainant — Nazim’s brother Afzal Jokhio — explained that Nazim’s legal heir was his mother.

“And since the mother is alive, no one else can reach a compromise with the suspects,” he said.

He had explained that terrorism charges had been added to the case. “Thus, it falls within the [ambit of] the anti-terrorism law and there is no provision for a compromise in such cases.”

The public circles are now watching towards PM Shehbaz Sharif-led government provide justice to Jokhio’s family to take the first step in establishing the rule of law in the province.
