World’s Largest ‘Ajrak’ Exhibited on Culture Day
Gigantic Ajrak was displayed in Karachi as an expression of love for indigenous culture

The Sindhi Culture Day was celebrated in the capital city and other towns of the province on December 6 with people cladded in cultural dresses and dancing to traditional songs. The festivities of the day kicked-off with the display of the world’s largest Ajrak (traditional Chaddar) in Karachi outside the press club.
The largest Ajrak is reportedly 360 feet long and 15 feet wide. It had toured different parts of the province before arriving in the provincial capital for display.
The longest Ajrak’s journey commenced from Kashmore, a district in Sindh. It was received by Sindhi locals in a hearty and warm reception in Karachi.
Ajrak was made in the city of Hala, Sindh and around 10 skilled laborers worked day and night for two months to finalize the beautiful traditional look of the chaddar.
As today Sindh Cultural Day is being celebrated across the world. the world’s largest ajrak displayed outside Karachi Press Club .

Ajrak was showcased in Karachi as an expression of love for the province’s centuries-old culture.
Ajrak is a unique form of block printing and the history of which can be traced back to the Indus Valley civilization.
It is made with the technique of resist painting, a way to paint only the desired portion of the fabric leaving the rest uncolored, using different patterns and usually dark vivid colors.

Hand-carved wooden blocks are the main tools to dye the cloth and create beautiful patterns on the chaddar.

Locals of Sindh hold a special affection for Ajrak and they not only wear this on occasions like weddings and other celebrations but also cover the deceased with this traditional piece of cloth.
Culture day in Sindh is a festive occasion with large gatherings and events celebrating the cultural colors of the province.
