Mobile Phones to go This Expensive After FED Up in Budget

The budget 2021-2022 may have brought relief for various sectors but an increase in the federal excise duty (FED) will hurt the people who love to keep branded mobile phones that are mostly imported as the prices will shoot up.

The tremors of the budget were felt in the shape of an increase in petrol price and domestic gas cylinders and the next thing to be nudged are the prices of imported mobile phones after an increment in FED.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said the government wants to boost local industry and for this purpose, it surged the FED on imported luxury items.

Pakistan is a large importer of mobile phones as the quality of the devices manufactured locally do not cater to the requirement.

The government has imposed an FED equivalent to Rs 165 on cellphones available for up to $30.

Similarly, mobile phones ranging between $30 to $100 will have duty equivalent to Rs 3,000 from Rs 1,620. It means that a buyer would have to pay additional Rs 1,380 on buying a phone falling the range.

The FED on mobile sets ranging from $101 to $200 has been hiked from Rs 2,430 to Rs 7,500, which will increase the price by Rs 5,000.

Further, the mobile lovers willing to buy smartphones worth between $201 to $350 will be charged some Rs 7,760 extra as the duty has surged from Rs 3,240 to Rs 11,000.

The cellphones in the price bracket of $351 to $500 will get expensive by Rs 5,550 as the FED on it has been hiked from Rs 9,450 to Rs 15,000.

The enthusiasts willing to buy smartphones exceeding $500 will also have to pay Rs 5,350 additional as the excise duty has surged from Rs 16,650 to Rs 22,000.
