PTA Wants Twitter to Take Action Against Propagandistic Posts

IT Minister Blames Indian Lobby Behind Creating Chaotic Trends on Microblogging Website

WEB DESK: As Twitter in the past and a couple of days ago once again proved to be an unhampered tool to spread fake news against the country, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) asked the microblogging website to take action against the accounts spreading such content.

Recently, the hashtags #CivilWarinKarachi and #CivilWarInPakistan swarmed with 3,384 tweets and 18,700 tweets respectively.

The trend started when twitters users, likely to be Indians, described the situation post bomb blast in a residential building in Karachi and other footages of some meeting between the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Qamar Javed Bajwa and Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as some past clips of police resisting mobs started as the commencement of a civil war.

The trend gained momentum within an hour and a large number of Pakistanis joined it too with the intent of mockery. Although, the tweets were shared only to tease and ridicule the users from India but they flooded on the website as if they were true.

It did not remain limited to Twitter but the ‘conflict’ between civilians and the army made it to the electronic media of the neighboring country as well.

Further, Information Technology (IT) Minister Aminul Haq held a meeting with the PTA officials over the anti-Pakistan content on social media.

In a tweet, Haq claimed that propagandistic posts against Pakistan on Twitter were made by the Indian lobby on the social platform.

He said that it was the responsibility of all social media platforms to discourage such hate speech and fake news.
