An American multinational technology company, International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, has disclosed the world’s first 2-nanometer chip technology which will assist in speeding up the computing process.

Over the years, transistors (basic building blocks) got smaller, which improved the speed of computer chips by making them faster and power-efficient.

However, the pace of these improvements had slowed down but IBM said, “Silicon has at least one more generational advance in-store”.

IBM showed that a transistor is the most basic building block of a chip that acts as an electrical on-off switch to form 1s and 0s binary digits.

As per company’s statement, “The technology could be as much as 45% faster than the mainstream 7-nanometer chips in many of today’s laptops and phones and up to 75% more power-efficient”.

Serving as a major manufacturer of chips of its times, IBM now outsources its high-volume chip production to Samsung Electronics. For this purpose, a chip manufacturing research center has been set up in Albany, New York.

The research center has joint technology development that deals with Samsung and Intel to use IBM’s chip-making technology.

Compared with today’s leading-edge 5-nanometer chip technology, the 2-nanometer chips introduced by IBM will be smaller and much faster.

Once the 2-nanometer chips work successfully in the market, the firm aims to work on the 3-nanometer chips.
