‘Breaking Encryption’ Not The Option For WhatsApp

WhatsApp account suspension

In a response to the Indian government’s traceability concerns, WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart expressed he is much hopeful to find solutions to address the concern of India without breaking end-to-end encryption.

While answering the questions during an interview on a United States (US) podcast in regards to the issue, Will Cathcart maintained that the company will come up with a solution to curb spread of misinformation.

“The company had made various changes to WhatsApp to ensure it does not become a broadcast messaging platform”, the head claimed.

On the other hand, Will also pointed out that the company has court cases in India on the encryption issue.

“So, we’ve explained this to the government. We’ve explained why we have concerns about it, we’ll stand up, and continue to explain those concerns”, Cathcart said during the podcast.

He is also hopeful to find a solution that does not disturb the encryption of the app.

“Our hope is that we can find a way to end up with solutions that don’t touch encryption. The core origin of this idea came out of concerns over misinformation. I mean, we share concerns over misinformation”, he responded.

However, he did not elaborate on what these potential solutions could look like.

As the sources stated, WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted that means only the people chatting are able to read the messages.

Over the last two years, the government of India has been pushing Facebook-owned WhatsApp to disclose sources of messages by breaking encryption if it triggers violence.

However, Will maintained that the company has been making some hard calls to defend encryption.

“If you are talking about breaking encryption, it’s really hard for me to imagine being comfortable with it”, Will Cathcart added on the podcast.
