‘Layoff Forced us to Sell Bodies to Feed Our Families’
The potential consumers for many brands are the affluent people for whom the sale offers are nugatory
On Resolution Day, nearly all big names associated with clothing industry in Pakistan are offering sales but another side of the same coin shows they sacked dozens of employees who were forced to join taboo professions to save families from starvation.
As part of March 23 celebrations, a number of brands and other e-commerce clothing outlets including Nishat, Khaadi, Al Karam, Cambridge, Limelight, and others launched ‘Resolution Day Sale’.

However, the potential consumers for many brands are the affluent people for whom the sale offers are nugatory.
Owing to recent economic crisis amid the coronavirus situation, most of the products of famous brands are becoming elusive for the general public which makes Resolution Day sales unintelligible.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many big names sacked a huge number of employees, especially the low-ranked, on the pretext of economic crunch which forced them to choose the dark roads to save families from starvation.
A number of sacked employees, particularly young girls, joined unfitting professions.

Requesting anonymity, one of the sacked female employees shared her story with News360 about how her former employer, a big fashion brand, snatched her means of living.
The ex-worker worked as a salesgirl and after getting laid off, she was forced to earn living by working as a prostitute.
“Layoff forced us to sell bodies to feed our families”, the 19-year-old admitted.
While sharing her story, the girl told News360 how she strived hard to get another job but failed and later started working as a prostitute in compulsion.
“If I get another option to work, I would prefer leaving prostitution”, the victim said.
“I wasn’t well-educated, that is the reason I was unable to find another job”, she said in a remorseful tone.
The girl shared that she was not the only one sacked by the brand but there were a number of low-paid employees who suffered the same fate as the company claimed to face economic crisis due to slump in sales amid coronavirus.
“Many like me are rotting on roads due to lack of jobs but we have to feed our families”, she added.
