Japanese Doctors Are Among Naysayers of Olympics

The medical practitioners said the hospitals in the host city are full and don’t have any spare capacity amid surge in cases

As the clock is ticking for Tokyo Olympics, the doctors have suggested the authorities to postpone the event because the hospitals are already overloaded with patients as the country is battling with the covid-19 pandemic.

About 6,000 primary care doctors represent Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association (TMPA) and they want the call-off of Tokyo Olympics scheduled to start in less than three months amid a surge in infections.

The medical practitioners said the hospitals in the host city are full and don’t have any spare capacity amid surge in cases.

Writing an open letter to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, one of the officials said, “We strongly request that the authorities convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that holding the Olympics is difficult and obtain its decision to cancel the Games”.

As the coronavirus cases are increasing in some areas of the Japanese capital, the government is advised to extend ‘third state of emergency’ in Tokyo until the month-end.

Striking an alarming situation in the country, the hospitals are facing a scarcity of medical staff and hospital beds.

Moreover, doctors said, “Japan will bear the maximum responsibility”, as dealing with heat exhaustion in a patient is another challenge.

In this critical situation of coronavirus pandemic, health experts have raised the voice for canceling the Games and an online petition has been signed by hundreds of thousands of people already.

According to Reuter’s data, only about 3.5% of Japan’s population of about 126 million has been vaccinated so far and doctors want to get Olympics postpone this year due to fears of covid-19 spread.

In response to the spread of coronavirus across Asian countries, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has canceled its annual meeting of the global elite that was scheduled in Singapore in August.
