The victory against the world champions is the first knockout win in a tournament for the Swiss since 1938 while the side has reached the last eight in a tournament after World Cup 1954.
The winning side will play Spain in the quarter-final on July 2.
The shocking defeat of France will also end the chances of coach Didier Deschamps who could be the first man to win World Cup and Euro Cup titles.
