World Today News

In Indonesia, a chess match attracted over a million viewers that was streamed live on YouTube as one of the players was alleged a ‘cheater’ last month.

As per reports, the friendly chess match between IM Irene Sukandar and Dadang Subur was held last week and attracted a record-shattering 1.25 million viewers on YouTube.

Why?

Subur who has an account with the name Dewa Kipas had been accused of cheating by another International Master, Levy Rozman.

Accoridng to details, Rozman became suspicious when he noticed that Subur gained over 800 Elo points in just 11 days.

His suspicion was fueled by how Kipas regularly spent 10 seconds making moves, even when the choice was obvious.

“Rozman checked the account and saw that in almost all of his wins, Kipas had an accuracy of over 90 percent”, reported Chess.com.

“A few hours later the account was closed for violating the Fair Play policy”, it added.

However, Dewa Kipas’s son started an online protest against the claim and maintained his father had been bullied by Rozman and his followers.

The 24-year-old son maintained that his father has a computer-like style as he was habitual of playing it against computers.

Sukandar appeared on the same podcast where she presented data on Subur’s games and it was decided then and there that she was going to play against Kipas.

Finally, after some run of the controversy, a game was agreed for a fair trial.

The game

The game that was played in a studio in Jakarta was organized by an Indonesian actor, television presenter, and YouTuber, Deddy Corbuzier, who also runs a popular podcast with around 14 million subscribers.

The match lasted for an hour and 21 minutes and so far, it has garnered around 8.7 million views.

Sukandar demolished Subur 3-0 and surprisingly the way Subur played looked nothing like what he played online.
