PDM Leaders in Lahore Give Resignations Another Chance

PDM leaders did not go for en masse resignations in Lahore meeting but instead decided to set deadline of December 31 for its submission

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has not lived up to its claims to strike the last nail in the coffin of the government by submitting en masse resignations for which PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz had been so vehement about it before its leaders’ meeting held on December 8 in Lahore.

The final decision regarding en masse resignations to build pressure on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been postponed to December 31.

The PDM leaders meeting was held in Lahore on December 8. It was convened by PDM Head Jamiat-e-Ulema Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The meeting was attended by the top brass of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maryam Nawaz.

Ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N Head Nawaz Sharif, and Akhtar Mengal joined the meeting virtually.

Whilst deliberating on how to build pressure on the government to hold new elections, Nawaz Sharif recommended that all lawmakers from PDM parties should submit their resignations with their party leaderships.

PDM leaders gave it a go and directed all MNAs and MPAs to submit their resignations to their respective leaderships by December 31.

However, the outcomes of the PDM contrary to what Maryam Nawaz had been claiming that December 8 would be a decisive day and the PDM rally in Lahore on December 13 would be the last nail in the coffin of the government and it will be overthrown.

The statements by Maryam Nawaz had developed an atmosphere that PDM would take the last resort of immediate resignations to derail the government.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan seems to have not been shaken by the decision of resignations taken in the PDM meeting in Lahore.

He said that the government would hold re-elections even if all opposition parties would resign.

It can be surmised from the premier’s statements that the government is not trembled by the decisions taken by PDM.
