Cholistan Jeep Rally, Get Set & Ready to be Kicked-Off

With the ongoing pandemic situation all around the world, recreational activities have seen a drop globally including in Pakistan. However, the 16th Cholistan Jeep Rally, a mega attraction for sports lovers, is going to be kicked-off but as a low-key event this year.

The rally is being organized in three districts of Punjab province including Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.

Organized by the tourism department, the jeep rally remains the center of attraction for auto-racing enthusiasts participating from the length and breadth of the country.

Preparing for several months in advance, around one hundred participants will be taking part in the rally this year.

Being organized in the Cholistan desert near Derawar Fort in Ahmadpur East Tehsil, Punjab, this is going to be the 16th time when the Cholistan jeep rally has been kicked-off.

With the qualifying rounds commencing today, the final rounds of the event will take place in the next three days.

History of Cholistan jeep rally

Famous among foreign and local motor-sports enthusiasts, the event was inaugurated in 2005.

The event has now become famous internally with the participation of female drivers too.

While talking to News360, Prince Muhammad Usman Khan Abbasi, Sahibzada Nawab of Bahawalpur V, explained how they bring about this event in the area.

“My family is fond of auto-racing hence we decided to inaugurate a similar event in our area for entertainment”.

Muhammad Usman along with his brother strived hard to make all arrangements called-for the event.

Taking place for the past 16 years, the rally has become a festival for the locals attracting foreign and local tourists in the area.

History of Cholistan

Cholistan, Pakistan’s largest desert, is locally known as Rohi with its inhabitants as Rohila.

The desert covers about 25,000 square kilometers and holds geographical importance for the country.

In past, the area used to be fertile with ample water supply from the Hakra River.

This year, the Chamber of Commerce Bahawalpur and Islamia University are jointly conducting a trade fair in the jeep rally under which the two will set up awareness stalls, besides food and drinks.
