70-Year-Old Kurban Tulum Rode Donkey To Beijing

In 1950s, a 70-year-old farmer Kurban Tulum from Yutian County wished to ride a donkey to Beijing as he wanted to express gratitude for the peaceful liberation of Xinjiang.

He put on festive clothes and prepared more than 50 kilograms of nang, a local flatbread, and home-grown fruits to take with him.

The help of local community made it possible for him to reach his destination, which was more than 3,800 kilometers away, where Chairman Mao received him.

Kurban Tulum’s love for the country has been held dearly and carried forward by his family.

Today Xinjiang is in its golden era of development, with its gross domestic product surged by more than 200 times, while its average life expectancy has risen from 30 years to 72 years.

In the past over 40 years, the Uygur population in Xinjiang has doubled from 5.55 million to over 12 million.
