Naswar: an Indigenous ‘Drug of Choice’ of KP Men

The use of Naswar (tobacco snuff) is prevalent in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the citizens are fond of consuming different varieties of the snuff in Peshawar.
For decades, naswar has served as the indigenous ‘drug of choice’ among the people of KP.

Apart from this, tribal areas of KP are the best producers of the tobacco crop which is famous across the province due to its taste.
The preparation of the snuff is done by crushing tobacco leaves and adding limestone to it, whereas, the black snuff requires charcoal ash.
Firstly, tobacco leaves are sun-dried or heat-dried and then mixed with ash from tree bark.
Later, oil-soaked lime is added for cohesion, followed by flavoring and coloring agents.
The history reveals that naswar reached Asia through Europe and United States (US) but became much popular among the Pashtuns of Afghanistan and Peshawar.
Naswar consumption leads to its addiction and the drug has multiple side effects too.
The tobacco snuff is widely known as the cause of oral and throat cancers.
