British Columbia Heatwave Deaths

With the changing climate all over the world, more than 230 deaths have been reported in British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, in the past few days due to a historic heatwave.

The cause for the significant increase in deaths is a severe heatwave that has shattered temperature records in Canada.

The province’s chief coroner, a government or judicial official who is empowered to conduct or order an inquest into the manner or cause of death, called it an ‘unprecedented time’.

The province was hard hit by the wave as several residents including the premier do not have the facility of air conditioning.

He added that at least 233 deaths were reported in the past four days and the number is going to increase as data continues to be updated.

“Since the onset of the heatwave late last week, the BC Coroners Service has experienced a significant increase in deaths reported where it is suspected that extreme heat has been contributory,” Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said in a statement.

The statement added that environmental heat exposure can be fatal for old-age people, infants, and people with chronic diseases.

Vancouver, a major city in British Columbia, witnessed a sudden spike in deaths and officers responded to more than 65 death cases since the heatwave began last Friday.

A media relations official told during a press conference that the situation is unusual and they have never experienced anything like this in Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the readings in the city were 98.6 °F on Saturday, 99.5 °on Sunday and 101.5 °F on Monday.

The ambulance service received a record 1,975 calls on Monday and the authorities have imposed a ban on the campfire on beaches.
