Denmark to Issue ‘Immunity Passports’ to Travelers

With coronavirus still looming large, Denmark has introduced special ‘immunity’ passports that will show whether the travelers have been vaccinated or not while they are expected to be launched in the coming months.

Danish government says that the passport is currently experimentation and it will be ready to use in the next three to four months.

Danish Finance Minister Morten Boedskov said amid the pandemic, it was crucial to get the society back on track as a number of Danish companies were multi-national companies (MNCs), and thus traveling of officials and employees was required.

Explaining the new digital passport, the minister told that it would be an additional document in digital form that would confirm that its holder was vaccinated.

The idea of the novel traveling document was shared and endorsed by the Confederation of Danish Industries, a body that comprises of Denmark’s major companies.

The initiative by Denmark to issue special immunity passports to travelers is not the first of its kind by a country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Estonia last year was also testing a ‘digital immunity passport’ to keep an eye on the travelers who had recovered from Covid-19 when the vaccines were still under development and little was known about contagion.

World Health Organization (WHO) had warned Estonia to be extra careful while issuing special passports as then, it was not known whether the immunity achieved by a person was permanent or the contagion could be contracted again.

Israel had announced a similar initiative earlier this year as it planned to launch a ‘green booklet’ for people who have been administered required doses of vaccine against the pathogen.

In April 2020, Chile had also announced to issue certificates to immunized citizens.
