The Sharia Council of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JI-H) has turned down speculations and addressed the doubts against the Covid-19 vaccine that it cannot be used due to the use of pork-derivatives.
In a circular issued by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, it said that many companies around the world are in the race of inventing the Covid-19 vaccine and even the people in India are anxiously waiting for its arrival.
It cited many pharmaceutical companies in the world including those in Muslim countries such as Turkey have claimed to invent an effective vaccine against Covid-19.
Clearing doubts, the circular stated that the sources of the drug are still not exactly determined and many speculations are running rife which has made Muslims in India and around the world concerned.
To build its argument, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind cited verses from the Quran that create sense of using Covid-19 vaccine despite doubts and fears.
- “And do not kill yourselves (or one another)”. Al-Nisa (4.29)
- “And do not throw (yourselves) with your (own) hands into destruction”. Al-Baqarah (2.195)
The circular quoted Hadiths to fortify its reasoning too.
- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Yes, O worshippers of Allah! Use remedies. For Indeed Allah did not make a disease but he made a cure for it”. (Al Tirmizi: 2038)
It stated that the use of porcine-derived products falls in the category of Haram.
However, the gelatin, whose source is the pigskin and is widely used as an ingredient in processed foods and medicines, is now being produced from alternative Halal sources.

The document stated that according to Fiqh, even the use of gelatin derived from Haram sources is permissible if the originality of the source is changed in the processing.
Even the antagonists of the aforementioned school of thought believe that in the case of saving lives, the use of the vaccine is allowed keeping in view the sacredness of human life.
However, in Pakistan, the religious leaders have not come forward to shun doubts over porcine-derivatives assumed to be used in the Covid-19 vaccine. It is high time that the clergy in Pakistan issue such circular or a statement to nullify doubts about the drug’s soources.
