Litmus Test of Public Vote Haunts Mighty Taliban Regime

Taliban test public vote

India Today

After the takeover, the litmus test for the Taliban after the rise to the power corridors appears to be a government by the vote of the public that would assist them not just to win the global trust but to establish their legitimacy, experts said.

The Taliban have emerged as the undisputed and sole victor in the two-decade-long war with the United States (US).

However, the global powers are questioning their legitimacy established without the power of vote despite the ostensible sea change in their ideology of running the country.

As the elected Afghan government turned pale, the militia has occupied the power on the land after advancing through the tracts and eventually capturing the center, Kabul.

The Taliban Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid held a press conference and dictated the policy ensuring the formation of an inclusive government, as being asserted, in the coming days or weeks.

However, the global powers have taken strong exception against the militia’s rule and chorused of not recognizing the regime citing the absence of public consent.

The Taliban ruled the landlocked country from 1996 to 2001 and their inaugural rule was also established without an election.

The absence of democratic government in Afghanistan is explicitly displeasing to the western powers despite the sea change in the clan’s policies twenty years after they were ousted from power through power.

The experts and analysts say it is high time for the Taliban to test their popularity, in the country that has surprisingly avoided a possible civil war within its borders, by public vote.

They said the best and viable option for the group would be to hold elections in the country that would assist them in establishing legitimacy as well as to articulate to the western powers that their compatriots support them too.

If not, the experts say, the Taliban would face immense difficulties in persuading the global community for recognition of their regime that would thus have far-reaching ramifications particularly the development of the country ravaged by sequential wars.
