Modi, Kashmiri Leaders to Meet Sans Hurriyat
For the past couple of years, the erstwhile autonomous region has remained in a climate of tension
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to meet with ostensibly pro-Indian Kashmiri local leaders in New Delhi today to apparently convince them to endorse his move regarding the region’s autonomy. All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an alliance of 26 political, social, and religious organizations wanting separation, has not been invited to the meeting due today.
On August 5, 2019, Modi revoked the special constitutional status of the occupied region and thousands of people were put in what is called mass jail.
The move agitated the local population even the leaders that were inclined towards the center and many of them were detained too.
Internet was cut off in the valley along with the deployment of around 1 million military personnel to keep things under control.
