Friendly terms with Pakistan have cost Navjot Singh Sidhu the key post of Punjab chief minister as the extremists opposed his nomination.
Amarinder Singh resigned as the Punjab chief minister on Saturday which has been accepted.

Right after it, the former chief minister bawled out at Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was the strongest candidate to get the post, on having connections with Pakistan.
He emphasized that elevation of Navjot Sidhu to CM would be a threat to national security and he has friendly terms with Pakistan and its Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Bajwa.
The ex-chief minister openly opposed Sidhu’s nomination after which the Congress retreated and picked Charanjit Singh Channi for the post.

However, the Congress leader defended the friendly exchange and said that General Qamar Bajwa had hugged him and said it was time for peace.
Later in November 2019, Pakistan’s government had opened the Kartarpur corridor on the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion.
In a rare instance, Congress has chosen Charanjit Singh Channi, a Dalit, as the new chief minister of Punjab who is the first one to assume the position.
