Following the harrowing coronavirus crisis in India, social media brimmed with posts against Prime Minister Modi demanding his resignation under Twitter trend #Resign_PM_Modi.

India currently reported 3,084,814 active coronavirus cases with 16.79% positivity and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is being blamed for the current crisis in the state.

On the other hand, election rallies that largely flouted covid-19 protocols were carried out by Modi, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, and other prominent political figures.
They met and greeted hundred and thousands of followers mostly without masks during the rallies.
The political gatherings were observed with minimal social distancing and mask-wearing was shunned by attendees.
IPL amid chaos
Not only this, the Indian Premier League (IPL) continues as scheduled despite the alarming situation, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been accused of being ‘tone-deaf’ for the decision.
Additionally, some cricketers have also tested positive for coronavirus but organizers paid no heed on it.
Devotees to gather again
Amarnath Yatra, which was called off last year due to pandemic, is scheduled for June 28 to August 22 and so far, the government has made no decision to cancel it.
As per a report in DW, the local government in Indian-administered Kashmir is contemplating setting up makeshift shelters and facilities for 600,000 Hindu pilgrims for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which it intends to host this summer despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Facebook guards Modi ‘by mistake’
On the other hand, Resign_PM_Modi posts were blocked on Facebook and restored hours later.
“We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to, and have since restored it,” a Facebook company spokesperson said.
The trending posts were blocked on Facebook for several hours amid a national controversy over India’s response to the current crisis.
