Sufi Basant: Spring’s Harbinger at Dargah Nizamuddin Auliya

The event has been celebrated for years in the memory of poet Amir Khusrau who dedicated songs of spring to his teacher Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya

Sufi Basant, an annual event at the dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, has been the harbinger of spring for several years. With marigold flowers, yellow attires, and reverberations of Sufi Kalam, the event commenced in Delhi on February 16.

With the arrival of spring, the event falls on the third day of Jumada-al-awwal, the fifth-month of the Islamic calendar.

Sufi Basant is an event that has been celebrated for years in the memory of poet Amir Khusrau who dedicated songs of spring to his teacher Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.

As historians report, the Sufi saint was in mourning state at that time due to the demise of his beloved nephew and Khusrau tried to cherish him with his songs.

A number of attendees and followers of Sufism along with several Sikhs and Hindus draped in yellow-colored dresses bring marigold flowers and gather at the Dargah to mark the celebrations.

The attendees shower yellow color flowers on the grave of the Sufi saint and enjoy the performances by the qawwals inside the shrine.
