Two Kashmiri-origin women, Sameera Fazili and Aisha Shah have joined US President-elect Joe Biden’s team.

Kashmiri-origin Sameera Fazili became the deputy director of the National Economic Council at the White House.

She will be holding a key position in the Biden team as the council coordinates the economic policy-making process and advises the US president.

She is currently the economic agency lead in the Biden-Harris Transition and was earlier posted at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where she served as the director of engagement for community and economic development.

Fazili is the second Kashmiri-origin Indian-American appointed to a key position in the incoming Biden administration. Her appointment has sparked off jubilations in her extended family in Srinagar.

Commenting on her appointment, her uncle Raouf Fazili said, “We are very proud. Everybody in Kashmir should be as it is a proud moment for the whole Kashmir.”

He further added that “It is a great honor and respect for every one of us and a great occasion.”

Aisha Shah has been named Partnerships Manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy, which would be headed by Rob Flaherty, Director of Digital Strategy.

It is also speculated that Kamala Harris who is elected as vice president of the US could play a meaningful role in resolving the long-standing Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

Harris, born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father who both immigrated to the United States to study, made history when Joe Biden picked her as his vice-president.

Although Kamala Harris had never worked in the US Senate foreign affairs committee, she raised her voice for the people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) when the Indian government unilaterally abrogated Article 370 of the constitution in 2019  which guaranteed the semi-autonomous status to the people of the occupied valley.

The people of Kashmir are extremely happy that two Kashmiri-origin women Sameera Fazli and Aisha Shah have joined Joe Biden’s team, they are hopeful that the two Kashmiri women holding key positions in the White House will prove beneficial in the ‘Kashmir conflict’.
