UN, WB Urge Countries to Keep Schools Open Despite Covid19

WEB DESK: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Bank have urged the governments across the world to keep schools open despite a surge in coronavirus cases.

The global bodies highlighted the harm that has been caused by the pandemic particularly in developing world.

UNICEF Education Chief Robert Jenkins termed reopening of schools and arrangement of catch-up classes as critical in all nations with less faiclities.

The report pointed out that the children in poor countries did not have access to remote learning opportunities and their education suffered heavily during the coronavirus lockdown.

UNESCO pushed the developing countries to invest in their education systems immediately to reduce the gap in standards of education in poor and rich countries.

The report comprised of data collected from around 150 nations between June and October.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s coronavirus positivity rate remained above 3% for the first time in nearly 70 days.

The country reported 908 new coronavirus cases on October 28, the highest number of per day infections since July 29.

Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar urged people to follow all precautionary guidelines as the cases across the country mount.

The government has also tightened restrictions with revision in timings for public sites and businesses apart from terming facemasks mandatory.

Further, France and Germany have once again imposed lockdowns after clobbered with second wave of coronavirus on Wednesday.

The stock markets were also affected in response to the announcement made by both governments.

The bars, restaurants and theatres will remain shut in Germany from November 2 to 30.

In France, apart from restrictions on businesses, the citizens have to carry a document to justify being out of home.
