Washington Post declares India the most dangerous country in the world for journalists

In cooperation with several international organizations including International Press Institute, Reporters Without Borders, International Women's Media Foundation, James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, Washington Post's full-page ad called on Modi to lift ban on press freedom

International Press Institute (IPI), editors, media executives and international press freedom groups have called on Indian Prime Minister Modi to end restrictions on press freedom.

In a full-page ad published in the American publishing house, Washington Post, calling India the most dangerous country for journalists, it demanded Modi to end the ban on freedom of the press.

The Full Patch ad published in the Washington Post has been sponsored by the International Press Institute (IPI), editors, media executives, and several international journalism organizations including the IPI Global Network.

The IPI Global Network demanded that the dangerous erosion of press freedom in India must be halted and that Joe Biden should make it a priority to address these issues at home and abroad.

The Washington Post’s front-page ad has been published at a time when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the US on an official visit and has also met President Joe Biden.

The National Press Club (Washington), Reporters Without Borders, International Women’s Media Foundation, James W. Foley Legacy Foundation raised their voices for the difficulties faced by journalists in India.

In the advertisement published in the Washington Post by international journalistic organizations, it is said that India is a very dangerous country for media and journalists despite being the largest republic in the world.

Journalist organizations have also criticized India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is oppressing the Muslim minority in India in violation of the law.

IPI urged US President Joe Biden to force Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take concrete steps to improve the environment of press freedom in India.

According to IPI, the crackdown against the media accelerated after the Modi government in India. IPI had also written a letter to Narendra Modi last month to ensure freedom of press.
